Empowered: Prepare for War and Place on Your Armor

‘Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her. ‘

Acts 16:16-18

If you have noticed our world is extremely dark. If you have not, what rock do you live under? And can I join you? The news is filled with stories that would make your blood boil, cry for the sheer depravity of others, or sit in apathetic silence. There are so many questions about why our world is so evil and why would God allow this? The best way to answer that is: WE ARE AT WAR!

‘Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ‘

Ephesians 6:11-12 https://www.bible.com/bible/111/EPH.6.11-12

There is the victory at the end of this war God has promised, but mankind is still in the middle of the battle for our souls. This war started before the first human being took their first breath. We were spoils of war. We signed over our ownership of Earth to God’s enemy, Satan. I know you are probably like, this is craziness, and I am not into this supernatural weirdness, but the sheer belief in God proves you believe in the supernatural. What Jesus did on the cross was taking back what did not belong to satan. There was a lot that Jesus did on the cross and it was not just about us going to Heaven. He restored our spirits that gives us a connection to our Heavenly Father and He brought us as a gift authority and power to tread on satan’s head.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. ‘ Ephesians 6:13

Why is any of this important? Because as Christians, I watch so many of us fight this Earthly battle in our own strength, but what we see in the physical is a result of what has happened in the spiritual world. How do we know this? Ephesians 6:10-18. In verse eleven we are told to put on the full armor of God, so that way we can be triumphant in the devil’s schemes. The evils we see are orchestrated by the devil. People do have the willpower to turn from these schemes, but it is through the armor of God that we are strengthened to not give in. What does this armor look like?

‘Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, ‘ Ephesians 6:14 https://www.bible.com/bible/111/EPH.6.14

I remember someone saying that the  Armor of God described in Ephesians is fashioned after a Roman soldier’s armor. Paul needed the people of Ephesus to visualize what he was talking about. I decided to do research on what this armor would have looked like to give you a full picture. Roman soldiers had a belt around their waist that held their weapons. Without this belt, their armor would not be able to stay in place on them. The same is for us, God’s truth holds our entire armor in place. Our Bible holds our entire armor in place. Interesting that it’s the very thing the world is trying to discredit. Think of how destructive lies about God is for the human soul. People’s lives are at risk without His truth. There are so many Christians who do not read their Bible and are not putting on the first piece of their armor. How effective of a soldier can we be, if we are not using the very thing that holds our armor together? This is how the heresy and confusion have started in the church. The devil is counting on you not reading your Bible because it’s how he can hit you with lies that disarms you.

The second piece is the breastplate of righteousness. We know that a breastplate protects a soldier’s vital organs from being stabbed with a sword or in modern times a bulletproof vest would protect from a gunshot. The organ most protected is the heart. It pumps life-giving blood to every organ in your body. Our spiritual armor, the breastplate of righteousness is our relationship with God. See we are not righteous by the good deeds we commit. Our righteousness comes from having a true relationship with Him. It’s His love that protects our heart from the deadly weapons of the enemy. No weapons formed against you shall prosper as long as you are in communion with your Father.

‘and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. ‘ Ephesians 6:15

The Roman soldiers’ footwear had spikes on the bottom of their shoes. It proved to be a formidable piece of armor. They were able to stand their ground firmly planted into the ground and if need be, be used as a weapon against their enemies. Why is this so important? As Christians, we are told we would tread on Satan’s head because we are the body of Christ. We are His feet. When we understand the gospel, we are able to hold our ground and trample on the enemy’s head.

‘In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. ‘ Ephesians 6:16 https://www.bible.com/bible/111/EPH.6.16

Satan is the father of lies. These lies are his weapons against us. If your faith is not strong in the promises of God, these lies will take you out. Our faith is used as a shield. For me personally, I have watched a lot of things in my life be taken from me. But God promised me Joel 2:25, ‘ I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you.’ Joel 2:25 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JOL.2.25. So when I am discouraged and satan is trying to tell me otherwise, I have my own personal promise from God. This is how our faith protects us. When things to our physical eyes do not line up with God’s promises, our faith sustains us and helps us to see with our spiritual eyes.

‘Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. ‘ Ephesians 6:17 https://www.bible.com/bible/111/EPH.6.17

The helmet of salvation, like the breastplate, protects our heads. It was our minds, our souls that got us into this trouble, to begin with. It is through salvation, that our minds are protected from the lies of the enemy. There’s a song by Anthony Evans, called No Condemnation, in the song Priscilla Shirer from War Room talks about how when we realize with our minds that salvation has given us freedom, we will not live life as if we are condemned. Then last but not least, the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

At the beginning of John, he describes Jesus as the word of God. The Bible, which is God’s truth reveals the power of the name of Jesus. When Paul commands the demon to leave the girl, he commands it in the name of Jesus Christ. He wielded the Sword and destroyed the enemy. The Holy Spirit is the vessel that carries the power of Jesus Christ and gives you the authority to use that sword.

‘And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. ‘ Ephesians 6:18 https://www.bible.com/bible/111/EPH.6.18

When you have your armor on, your prayers and requests are destructive to the enemy. The damage you do in the spiritual world is powerful. Without this armor, your prayers are like bringing a knife to a gun fight. The enemy is crafty and clever, but he is no match for our Heavenly Father, who has bestowed His power unto us when we accept salvation. Now that you are prepared for war, go out and fight!
